French press: Stoianoglo, the Russian stone hanging around Maia Sandu’s neck

The echoes of President Maia Sandu’s visit to Paris still resonate in the French press, which, however, began to analyze “coldly” the situation in the Republic of Moldova, noting that in the current conditions of Moldovan justice, the ideas of reform and exit from the Russian orbit have no chance. The cornerstone of the Moldovan judiciary, but also of the pro-European president Maia Sandu is the general prosecutor, Alexandr Stoianoglo, Igor Dodon’s protégé, who in turn is Putin’s protégé, shows in an article published in the well-known French publication The Values Club ”. The publication recalls that Stoianoglo’s only achievements were the release of controversial figures such as Veaceslav Platon, the undercover Oleg Pruteanu, or the former convicted of corruption prime minister, Vlad Filat.

“Le Club Valeurs” makes a foray into the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe and the importance of Maya Sandu’s victory in ensuring the country’s European course, but also mentions the immediate attacks from Moscow. One of the country’s main challenges is the reform of the judiciary, but there are strong doubts that it can be carried out effectively, including given the personality of Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo.

The French publication recalls that he was appointed by Igor Dodon “following a mimicked and controversial selection process”.

“Alexandr Stoianoglo is a Russian stone hanging around the neck of the new president of Moldova and compromising from the start any chance of success of Maia Sandu’s justice reform agenda,” writes “Le Club Valeurs”.

The only “achievement” for more than a year of prosecuting the legacy left by pro-Russian President Dodon is the release from prison of all criminals, including the few convicted of involvement in the resounding theft of the billion, the publication notes. This refers to the release of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, former head of the Banca de Economii, Grigori Gacikevici, recently caught in a luxury hotel in an exotic country with a close friend of Filat – Eduard Bănăruc. Stoianoglo came under the scrutiny of European law institutions after he released from prison one of the most feared thieves and drug traffickers in Europe, Oleg Pruteanu, known in the underworld as “Borman”. The thief has been detained in 2017 following a Europol operation, with the efforts of police officers from Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Greece and Lithuania.

Another release from prison in which the Chisinau prosecutor scandalized public opinion is that of Veaceslav Platon, the most feared raider in Eastern Europe, who destroyed several businesses and banks in Moldova, Ukraine and Russia, but who became known especially by organizing the famous money laundering scheme “the Russian Laundromat”.

“Thus, as long as Russia continues to control the parliament and the general prosecutor in Chisinau through former President Dodon, President Maia Sandu cannot honour any of its commitments to, the reform agenda of the European Union implicitly the reform of the judiciary remains blocked” , concludes the French publication “Le Club Valeurs”.
